2027 BBQG Quilt Show Categories 1 General Instructions: For all categories with the exception of Youth (1600), the submitter must be a member of the Brazos Bluebonnet Quilt Guild. Anyone may join the BBQG and pay dues, until the last day of quilt registration and be eligible to submit quilts.

Notes about categories:

  • The person submitting the quilt must have participated in quilt construction and/or quilting. Thus quilts received as gifts or awards or purchased, are not eligible for submission.

  • Quilts constructed from kits (with fabric supplied), Block of the Month (BOM) projects (with fabric supplied), or Quilt Along (fabrics supplied) may only be entered into Category 1100.

100. Pieced Large – Any quilt that is 70% or more pieced based on traditional style, foundation/paper piecing, patterns, settings, pieced depictions of animals/flowers, etc. May be hand or machine pieced. Length plus Width must be 161” but not exceed 240”. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people.

200. Pieced Medium – Any quilt that is 70% or more pieced based on traditional style, foundation/paper piecing, patterns, settings, pieced depictions of animals/flowers, etc. May be hand or machine pieced. Length plus Width must be 121” and not exceed 160”. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people.

300. Pieced Small – Any quilt that is 70% or more pieced based on traditional style, foundation/paper piecing, patterns, settings, pieced depictions of animals/flowers, etc. May be hand or machine pieced. Length plus Width must be 30” and not exceed 120”. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people.

400. Reproduction quilts - Quilts designed to replicate a specific vintage era. (i.e. 30’s, Civil War, etc.) or vintage style (i.e. Baltimore Album) All sizes accepted. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people.

500. Applique/Reverse Applique – Quilts are at least 70% or more applique. All sizes accepted. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people.

600. Art – Quilts which are an original design and not based on a commercial pattern. Any technique, combination of techniques or materials may be used. (i.e.: portrait, collage, photo, thread painting, painted, etc.) All sizes accepted. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people.

700. Modern – Quilts that are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. (e.g. Minimalism, asymmetry, expansive negative space, improvisational piecing). All sizes accepted. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people.

800. Theme – Quilts in this category must have a recognizable element that reflects the show Theme (Sparkling Stars). Entries may be constructed by hand or machine. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people. Judges will give greater emphasis to the creativity in depicting the theme. All sizes accepted.

900. Miniature – Maximum block size is 4”. Length plus width must be no more than 48”. Quilt is scaled down {miniaturized} and should appear to be a small version of a full-size quilt with components reduced in scale and bound. Includes all techniques. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people. Categories 2

1000. Group – Quilts created by 3 or more people. At least 1 must be a BBQG member. Any technique can be used for quilt construction. Cannot be a BOM/Kit quilt constructed from precut or preselected fabrics. All sizes accepted.

1100. BOM/Kit Quilts/Quilt Alongs with fabric supplies - Any quilt constructed from precut or preselected fabrics. Entries in the category are not eligible for Best of Show or Go Texan. All sizes accepted. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people.

1200. Other Techniques – This category may include any quilt that does not obviously fit into another category. Examples are English Paper Piecing, Crazy quilts, Yo-Yo, Red Work, Whole Cloth, and Computer assisted or Hand Embroidery. All sizes accepted. Can be work of 1 or 2 people.

1300. Youth – A quilt pieced by a person under the age of 16. All sizes accepted. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people. Entry Fee NOT required for this category.

1400. Novice – Category is for beginning quilt makers and applies to the first 3 quilt tops made by the quilter. Includes all techniques and sizes. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people.

1500. Panel Quilts –Any quilt constructed using a printed panel. All sizes accepted. Can be work of 1 or 2 people.

1600. Holiday Quilts – Have a specific holiday (not a season) identified through the quilt (Christmas, Hanukkah, Easter, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, July 4th,etc.) All sizes accepted. Can be the work of 1 or 2 people.

1700. Challenge Quilts– Theme to be determined. Quilts must adhere to the rules distributed to guild members. Any number of people can be involved in constructing the quilt. Entry Fee NOT required for this category. Challenge quilts will not be judged but winners will be selected by Viewer’s Choice. The top three quilts will be auctioned off with proceeds to benefit the BBQG. Other quilts will be donated to the Care Quilt Program unless the submitter chooses to ‘buy back’ the quilt for a fee of $50.00.

1800. Bed Turning – Not a judged category. These will be used for Bed Turning demonstrations during the show. Quilts must be registered through the registration process, but Entry Fee is NOT required. All sizes accepted. Any number of people can be involved in constructing the quilt. (Including the Bed Turning Quilts as a category within the registration system helps with tracking and handling of the quilts). Go Texan – Not an independent category. Quilts considered for this designation can be entered in other categories. Go Texan entries must comply with Go Texan rules found on the Houston Livestock Show website. (No kits allowed, both piecer and quilter must be a resident or full-time employee within Brazos County, does not have to be western themed). If you want your quilt to possibly be chosen for our Go Texan entry, you must indicate this on the registration form.
